Jarkko Nieminen stomps over Somdev Devvarman to enter round two – London Olympics 2012
Finn number one, Jarkko Nieminen, got the better of the Indian star, Somdev Devvarman, in a rain-interrupted match at the London Olympics 2012 on Sunday. He jolted down a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Devvarman, who received an ITF (International Tennis Federation) Place in this event, to progress into the second round in this prestigious summer Olympics event.
Nieminen showed magnificent skills and abilities to outsmart the Indian star in straight sets at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Facing each other for the first time, the Finn not only took lead in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against Devvarman but also secured a spot in the round of 32.
The 31-year-old enthusiastically entered Games of the x*x Olympiads. He prevailed throughout the opening set and eventually clinched the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Ranked 43rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Nieminen was leading 1-0 in the second set when the match was stopped due to rain. However, after the play resumed, the Finn kept his rhythm and eventually carved out the set with a breadstick.
After stealing the show on Court number 17, Nieminen gained confidence boost for his next match-up against the top local star, Andy Murray. The third seeded Brit cashed in all three break chances to overpower Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Murray, who made a final showdown at the Wimbledon Championships (lost to world number one Roger Federer), stated after winning this match:
"I always enjoy coming back onto the court… I love the atmosphere.  A lot of the people that were here today, it would have been their first time to Wimbledon. I practised against Stan a few times last week [in the build-up to the Olympics] and played really well against him. I’m really up for the tournament. I want to be involved in this event for as long as possible. I’m going to give it my best shot.”
The fourth seed, David Ferrer, will accompany Nieminen in the following round. He recorded a straight set victory against Vasek Pospisil to progress.
