Jarmila Gajdosova and Monica Niculescu advance into the quarterfinal of 2011 Estoril Open
Number two seed Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia eased past compatriot Casey Dellacqua 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the 2011 Estoril Open in Portugal.
Gajdosova looked to attack right from the start. She made good moves and made her opponent run for her money with her aggressive approach. She broke the serve in the second game of the opener to earn a vital 2-0 lead in the set.
The Australian then had another chance of making a serve break in seventh game of the set which she converted with ease to take an impassable 5-2 lead in the set. She claimed her next service game quite comfortably to lead the set score 1-0.
The second also followed a similar pattern with Gajdosova dominating her opponent in almost all aspects of the game. The Australian broke the serve twice in the set not allowing her opponent to breath. She smashed her wonderful
backhand and forehand winners all over the court and made Arvidsson’s game look completely ineffective. The 24-year-old converted one of the match points to seal the contest that lasted for only 1 hour and 9 minutes.
With her close to the net approach Gajdosova earned crucial points. She played in the chip shots cleverly to surprise her opponent and also executed her shots brilliantly from the baseline. Her powerful and accurate serve ensured
her a very strong position in the match as she fired 6 aces. Gajdosova achieved an impressive 66 per cent first serve conversion and also saved vital points with her rock solid defence. She saved three out four break points against to her dent her opponent’s
confidence levels.
Ranked 31 in the world, Gajdosova was delighted at her victory and aimed for similar performances in her coming matches at the Women’s Tennis Association tournament. She has been in decent form over the last few months and will
be hoping to maintain her good run at the WTA tour. However, consistency and strong temperament are going to be crucial if she wants to stand a chance against the top seeded players at the tournament. Arvidsson on the other hand looked a bit out of sorts and
committed a number of unforced errors. She paid heavily for her poor shot selection and ordinary game play.
In another match Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu thrashed out American qualifier Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-4 to advance into the quarterfinal of ATP 250 series red clay courts tournament.
Niculescu superior serve created all sorts of problems for her opponent from Unites States. She broke the serve four times in the match and also saved vital break points against her to strengthen her position in the match. The
23-year-old Romanian prevailed after 1 hour and 59 minutes of exciting play.
