Jarmila Gajdosova bounces past Mandy Minella into the quarterfinal – WANLIMA Women’s Open 2011
Top seeded Australian Jarmila Gajdosova survived past Luxembourgian Mandy Minella in a three setter nail biter match at the WANLIMA Open 2011, an outdoor hard court event held in Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China on Wednesday.
24-year-old Aussie registered a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Minella to advance into the last eight of this WTA International event.
Ranked 34th in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Gajdosova played exceptional tennis to triumph over the Luxembourgian, ranked 132 spots below her, on their second meeting in two hours and seven minutes. Facing
each other after six years, the Aussie not only maintained her winning record to extend lead in the head-to-head series by 2-0 but also secured a quarter-final spot at this International Women’s Open.
25-year-old Minella was nervy at the begging of the match as she was facing the highest ranked player of the tournament. She lost an early serve but roared back in the eighth game to level the scores at 4-4. The Luxembourgian then
kept her following serve and broke Aussie’s serve again in the last game to win the opener with a 6-4 score line.
The Bratislava native, Gajdosova got back in action in the second set. After Minella held her serve in the first game, she unleashed her skills and abilities to win the next three games in a row before the Luxembourgian could hold
on again. The Aussie kept her composure to win the following three games to register a 6-2 win.
The Aussie lost her ways again and after gifting away her opening serve, she went 3-0 down. However, she made an epic comeback after this and unleashed flurry of groundstrokes to reel off next six games in a row. She eventually
earned a 6-3 victory over Minella.
Summing up the match, the Aussie displayed dismal performance as she spilled seven double faults, coughed several unforced errors and clobbered a poor first serve share of 40 percent as compared to Minella’s 48 percent. Gajdosova,
however, earned a spectacular 84 percent win on it. She also saved four out of seven breakpoints faced and cashed in on six out of fourteen breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
Up next for the blooming Aussie is the winner of the match between eight seeded Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova and French Aravane Rezai.
