Jarmila Gajdosova down Anabel Medina Garrigues to advance into the third round – French Open 2011
Australian Jarmila Gajdosova, twenty-fourth seed, dumped Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues in a tough duel to advance into the third round of the 2011 Roland Garros, a major clay court tournament held in Paris, France. She registered
a 7-6(4), 6-4 win over the 28-year-old veteran Spaniard on Thursday.
The 26th ranked Aussie put up a great show to edge past the Spaniard, ranked 17 places below her, in one hour and forty-seven minutes at Stade Roland Garros. She met Garrigues for the second time after eight years and
maintained her winning record.
Gajdosova confidently entered the opening set and rolled the balls expertly onto the lines to hold her serves. She lost one serve but easily kept remaining serves. The Aussie produced 57 percent first serve share and earned a convincing
55 percent win on it.
Garrigues on the other side of net played the same level of tennis. She lost her serve once but kept the remaining serves by her exquisite forehands. The Spaniard clobbered an awesome 75 percent first serve share and registered
an impressive 60 percent win on it.
Both players dragged the set to tie-breaker and cancelled each other out with a 3-3 score in it. Later, the Aussie took control of the game and after hitting well placed winners, she clinched the tiebreaker 7-4.
24-year-old Gajdosova lost her ways into the final set and lost an early serve as well. However, she roared back in the eighth game to square the scores 4-4. The Aussie then recreated her magic and broke the elder’s serve again
in the tenth game to bag the set with a 6-4 score line.
She failed to save both breakpoints faced and converted all three breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to clinch comfortably. Gajdosova produced a lower first serve share of 59 percent as compared to Spaniard’s 73 percent
and earned an acceptable 56 percent win on it.
Overall, the Aussie clobbered thirty-two unforced errors to Garrigues’ thirteen but she hammered thirty-two winners to Spaniard’s eleven which helped her win easily.
The Aussie will next face fifteenth seeded German Andrea Petkovic who trashed Czech Lucie Hradecka in straight sets to reach this spot.
The seeded German produced a much better first serve share of 80 percent as opposed to Czech’s 61 percent and registered an awesome 76 percent win on it.
She faced tough time in the opening set and won it in tie-breaker. However, she raised her level of game in the final set to eventually seal the deal in eighty-seven minutes with a 7-6(2), 6-2 score line.
