Jarmila Gajdosova gets stunned by Stefanie Voegele in the first round – Family Circle Cup 2012
Seeded 16th in the tournament draw, Jarmila Gajdosova was upset by world number 131, Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland, in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 in the opening round at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, USA on Monday.
It took the Swiss one hour and forty four minutes to surprise the world number 52 after a tough competition.
Voegele and Gajdosova traded a breakthrough in the first two games of the opening set to even out the score at 1-1. They could not hold their serve in the last three, as the Swiss struck twice to win it 6-4.
The 22-year-old, Voegele, gave a satisfactory first serve performance, keeping the percentage at 72 and converting 17 of the 31 of them into points. Gajdosova was poor on her second deliveries, committing three double faults and
losing 10 of the 13 points on them.
The Australian, Gajdosova, started aggressively in the second set, winning opening three games to attain a 3-0 advantage. She lost her next serve but hit another blow immediately to stretch the lead to 4-1. The Australian maintained
it till the end, sealing it 6-2.
Gajdosova banged in two aces and grabbed 12 of the 16 first serve points in the second set. The Australian, however, could not control the double faults, delivering five of them. She relied almost flawlessly to her opponent’s second
serves, claiming amazingly 11 of the 12 points on them.
Voegele made a confident start in the decider, breaking Gajdosova in the second game and consolidating on it to race to a 3-0 lead. Though, the Australian bounced back and levelled the score at 3-3. Voegele captured three of the
next four games, striking decisively in the 10th to close it 6-4.
The Swiss won most of the points on her first serve, pounding in three aces and delivering 73 percent of them. Voegele had an equally brilliant conversion rate, as he won 16 of the 22 points on them. The right-hander was brilliant
on the second returns, as she capitalised on Gajdosova’s weak serve to win 12 of the 16 points on them. The Swiss put away one of the two break points she faced and converted two of the three she received in the final set.
Voegele is drawn to play world number 73, Lucie Hradecka of Czech Republic, in the next match. The Czech beat 95th ranked, Urszula Radwanska, in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 in the opening round.
