Jarmila Gajdosova hits back at Coco Vandeweghe in round one – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Australian tennis star, Jarmila Gajdosova, made an epic comeback to tumble over the local wild card entrant, Coco Vandeweghe, in a three set thriller at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Wednesday. She clobbered a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over the American starlet
to book a spot in the second round at this major hard court tournament.
The world number 52 showed tremendous skills to overcome Vandeweghe in almost two hours. After pocketing this match, Gajdosova not only avenged her loss at the Pan Pacific Open two years ago but also levelled the head-to-head series by 1-1 against the American.
Ranked 159th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Vandeweghe lost her serve once in the opening set but capitalised on two out of five break chances to pull out the opener with a 6-4 win. She produced a drastic first serve share of 45 percent but impressively
marked 11 out of 14 points on it.
The frustrated Aussie rebounded in the second set and regardless of gifting away her serve once; she pocketed the equaliser by winning six games to three. Gajdosova converted two out of five break opportunities to her advantage and dominated throughout the
set.
Gajdosova kept momentum running into the final set and easily plucked the decider by winning six games to three. The Aussie failed to brush off both breakpoints she came across but cashed in four out of six break opportunities to earn the spotlight.
Overall, the Aussie clobbered a better first serve share of 54 per cent as opposed to Vandeweghe’s 50 per cent and impressively marked 31 out of 51 points on it.
The 24-year-old will next confront the 22nd seed, Yanina Wickmayer, who received a bye into the second round after being a seeded player of the tournament.
Later, Klara Zakopalova crushed the Spanish rising star, Laura Pous-Tio, with double breadsticks to advance into the second round. She easily pocketed her entire serves without facing any breakpoint and cashed in five out of nine break opportunities. The
Czech spilled more errors but covered it up by possessing a higher first serve share.
