Jarmila Gajdosova shocks Roberta Vinci in the first round – Brisbane International 2013
Roberta Vinci received a New Year shock at the hands of the 183rd ranked Aussie, Jarmila Gajdosova, who rallied from a set down to beat the 29-year-old Italian visitor. A gruelling contest lasted for almost an hour and
50 minutes and ended in favour of the 25-year-old local with the final scores of 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Gajdosova has something against the 16th ranked Vinci. She has extended her head-to-head record to 4-1 with the triumph on Sunday. It has been a terrific season for the Italian veteran but the start to the new season
wasn’t very exciting, rather formidable.
The Aussie didn’t live up to the expectations of the crowd at the start; lost the breakpoint in the opening serve game and almost dropped another one in the third game. As she grew into the counter, Gajdosova gained confidence
but the trail was still hurting her. In the end, the Italian succeeded in holding the Aussie from fighting back into the opening set and secured a lead of one set.
In the second set, it was all about the local superstar who thrashed the 29-year-old Italian to all corners of the courts. She started off in a commanding fashion; grabbed a couple of successive breakthroughs to post a resounding
lead of 5-1. She held her serve to love in the following game to round off the second set in quick succession.
The momentum was with the Aussie star. She clinched an early breakthrough in the third set to register a lead of 2-1 and doubled the pressure on her rival with another breakpoint in the fifth game. Vinci rallied back to grab one
breakthrough back in the following game but she couldn’t explore another chance to power down her rival.
Gajdosova, with the help of the crowd support, slammed down the superior ranked visitor in her opening match of the new season to mark a strong foundation for a remarkable comeback. She enjoyed a career-high ranking of world number
25 last year but incurred a severe injury in 2012 that dropped her out of Too-150 players in the world.
World number two, Maria Sharapova, will be her next rival in the tournament.
