Jarmila Gajdosova shocks Yanina Wickmayer in the second round – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Australian rising star, Jarmila Gajdosova, plonked the Belgian ace, Yanina Wickmayer, in a three set nail-biter at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Friday. She clobbered a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over the 22nd seed to advance into the third round at this Premier Mandatory event taking place in Indian Wells in California, United States.
The Slovakian-born Gajdosova showed tremendous skills at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. She took down the Belgian for the first time in their third meeting and not only avenged her loss at the Australian Open last year but also booked a spot in the round of 32 at this hard court event.
24th ranked Wickmayer made quick in-roads at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event and held her opening serve with poise. She maintained consistency in her game and slid remaining serves without facing any barrier. The Belgian capitalised on two out of three break chances and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
Gajdosova hit back in the following set and confidently swiped in her opening serve. She lost her serve once but cashed in three out of five break opportunities to pull out the equaliser with a 6-2 success.
The 24-year-old kept momentum floating in the final set and easily plucked entire serves after dusting away both breakpoints she came across. She then got the breakthrough after capitalising on one out of seven break chances and sealed the decider with a 6-4 win.
Overall, the Aussie outshined the seed completely as she fired 12 aces and availed 34 out of 47 points on her first serve share. She then capped the match by clinching 92 points as opposed to Wickmayer’s 87.
Next up for the unseeded Gajdosova is the wild card entrant, Jamie Hampton, who stunned the 12th seed, Jelena Jankovic, in straight sets to set-up this clash. Hampton dumped the Serbian number one with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in one and half hour.
The 19th seeded Daniela Hantuchova also became a casualty of the day. She suffered a 3-6, 7-6(7), 3-6 loss at the hands of Czech Republic’s Klara Zakopalova for the first time in their fourth meeting.
