Jarmila Gajdosova sneaks past Kathrin Woerle to round two – Malaysian Open 2012
World number 45, Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia, sneaked past the German tennis professional, Kathrin Woerle, in the opening round clash of the BMW Malaysian Open tournament on Tuesday. It was a cracking battle that lasted for
two hours and 26 minutes. The fourth seed wildcard entrant edged past her opponent with 1-6, 7-6(2), 7-5.
Gajdosova had already lost the only battle played before this face-off; it was the second qualifying round of the FORTIS Championships in 2006. It was also an epic three-setter; both these players delight the crowd with their ability
to jump from behind and oust their opponent.
The opening set was completely hijacked by the German, who broke serve in the second game to take a crushing lead of 3-0 upfront. She continued to hammer her opponent down without any pressure whatsoever; registered another breakthrough
to take 5-1 lead that was coupled with a successful serve hold to round off the first set proceedings in quick fashion.
Aussie superstar turned the tables on her opponent in the second set. She made sure that she capitalized on her serve games; apart from a swap of breakpoints in the sixth and seventh game she managed to perform the basics right
and held her serve throughout. A tie-breaker round was enforced and Gajdosova took an early mini-break that proved enough to sneak a set win for her.
The final set was played with immense caution by both players. They made sure that no one was given any easy points at all; capitalized on their serves with utmost command except the fifth game when Woerle was under the cosh but
saved a couple of breakpoints to register a serve hold.
A see-saw battle continued between the two contestants till the end with scores ticking over to 5-5. The pressure was on the German player who had to hold her serve to revert the stress back on her opponent but she failed to do
so and lost the critical serve game to her opponent. She exerted immense pressure on Gajdosova in the following game but couldn’t convert three breakpoints in her favour and lost the match.
Jarmila Gajdosova locks horns with the Grecian tennis starlet, Eleni Daniilidou, in the next round.
