Jarmila Gajdosova will defend her Hobart title next month – Tennis News
Australia’s number two, Jarmila Gajdosova, has confirmed that she will be defending her championship title at Moorilla Hobart International in January to kick off her 2012 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) season. The $220,000 WTA
event will be played on the outdoor hard courts of Hobart, Australia, from 9th to 15th of next month.
24-year-old Slovakian-born bagged her career’s second WTA championship title at Hobart this year and broke into the top-40 among women tennis players for the first time. She outplayed 59th ranked American competitor,
Bethanie Mattek-Sands, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, in the final of the tournament to earn 280 ranking points. Gajdosova finished off the 2011 WTA season a decent winning record of 34-24 and hopes of bagging a lot more victories in the coming season.
“I'm really excited about coming back to Hobart, and after my success this year I hope to perform well in early January,” Gajdosova said. “The crowds are so supportive in Hobart. I really enjoy playing out there on the centre court”
Gajdosova bagged just one title in 2011 WTA season but she also finished quarter-finalist on three occasions and featured a semi-final as well. The 24-year-old is determined to convert her opportunities in the coming season and
the make the most out of them to climb further up the rankings.
The Aussie was 0-17 against Top-10 players at the start of the 2011 season but she won the epic battles against Australia’s number one, Samantha Stosur, former French Open champion, Francesca Schiavone, to break her drought. Gajdosova
went on to reach her career best ranking of world number 25 in May this year but her inconsistencies led down to number 33 by the year end.
The tournament director of Moorilla Hobart International, Mark Handley, was extremely delighted on Gajdosova’s commitment on leading the competitive field. Handley welcomed her decision for defending her title next month and encouraged
other players to be a part of the competition as well.
“Jarmila has had another impressive year and there is no doubt she is in contention to win the title again next year,” he commented. “Watching her play here in Hobart will inspire and entertain the young sporting fans and loyal
tennis community.”
Moorilla Hobart International will be a crucial stop for the players before going into the first Grand Slam title of the year, the Australian Open.
