Jarmila Groth ends Ayumi Morita’s run at the BMW Malaysian Open 2011
Australian wild card and fourth seed Jarmila Groth managed to oust Japanese tennis pro Ayumi Morita in three difficult sets at the quarterfinals of the BMW Malaysian Open 2011, winning the match 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.
Groth, who is the current world number 31, took two hours and twelve minutes to defeat her world number 57 opponent.
The 23-year-old Groth was expected to win the match however, the Australian pro faced serious competition from sixth seed Morita. The Japanese gave Groth a run for her money, breaking the player five times and driving her to a total of 20 break points.
The first set of the match was a competitive one for Groth, who fought back and forth against Morita to score five aces. She also managed to convert two break points successfully to win 55 per cent of a total of 83 points to win the set 7-5.
The second set was a much more challenging one for Groth, who committed two double faults along with three aces. She was also broken twice by Morita and scored eight points less than her opponent to lose the set and drive the match into a deciding set.
The Australian player managed to recover her confidence in the next set, breaking Morita thrice and committing just one double fault. After a tough battle, she came out victorious, taking the final set 7-5 and with it, the match.
This is Groth’s second victory against Morita, bringing their head-to-head record to 2 all. Morita managed to defeat the player twice before, most recently in their last meeting in the 2010 China event’s semi-finals. The Japanese player won the match 6-4,
2-6, 7-5.
Groth will face either fifth seed Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic or second seeded French Marion Bartoli in the next round of the tournament depending on the outcome of their quarterfinal match.
