Jarno Trulli upbeat about new exhaust blown diffuser for Lotus-Renault: Formula 1 news
Recent reports have revealed that Lotus-Renault driver, Jarno Trulli, has described his team’s first day running in Friday Practice Session of the Spanish Grand Prix with its new exhaust system as ‘positive’. He also revealed that the team did not have any
issue with the blown diffuser system in their Practice Session, so their day was quite good with the cars.
The Italian went on to add, "It's all about trying to find the right ride height to run the car in the spot where the aero works. We need to learn the car and then use the engine properly to blow the diffuser."
The team has had power steering problems since the start of the season. Despite this issue, Trulli is confident that the aerodynamics development in the T128 car will help them achieve a win.
The 36-year-old driver informed reporters that team Lotus’ main focus after the Turkish Grand Prix has been on adjustments to the car’s set-up to work best during races with the new exhaust blown diffuser.
Trulli took part in Friday’s Practice Session and finished in 20th place for the team. While his team-mate, Heikki Kovalainen, was 3.947 off the pace and completed his practice run in 18th spot. The team is hopeful that the upgrades
will be worth a second per lap in Sunday’s race, allowing the drivers to break into the midfield on raw pace for the first time on the gird this year.
On the other hand, the FIA has warned F1 teams who are running with blown diffusers at the Barcelona race weekend that there is a big risk of them being subject to a protest this grand prix.
The FIA technical delegate Charlie Whiting has said, “An exhaust system is there for the purpose of exhausting gases from the engine, so when you are off throttle it is not doing that – therefore driver movement is being used to influence the aerodynamic
characteristics of the car.”
The Spanish Grand Prix’s Qualifying round will take place on May 21, in Barcelona.
