Jarome Iginla leads Calgary Flames past Montreal Canadiens 5-4 -NHL Update
Calgary needs their captain to step up at this time in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season and that is exactly what Jarome Iginla did as he scored two goals to lead Flames past Montreal Canadiens, 5-4, Tuesday night, March 6, 2012,
at the sold-out Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Flames are still out of the playoff race sitting at number 11 in the Western Conference with 72 points, but a few more wins back-to-back will most probably get the job done.
"We've been going through a tough stretch and sometimes when it goes like that, you just need to get that one to get over that hump," said Iginla, who powered Calgary to snap their two-game losing streak.
David Moss and Jarome Iginla added two straight for Calgary 2:15 apart in the opening period while Tomas Plekanec added the first for Montreal on a power play with the Flames’ captain out for holding.
Having an injury riddled line-up is a major factor for Calgary’s below than average performance this season, but their committed to getting it back together.
"You look at all the guys we have out of the lineup, you know that you're going to get more ice time and have a bigger role," Moss said. "It's good, it gives guys a chance to step up and play more minutes and earn the ice time."
Max Pacioretty added another for Montreal but Calgary’s focus was not about to be lost as Mark Giordano and Jarome Iginla added two more for the Flames to keep them burning entering the final 20 minutes.
Curtis Glencross’ breakaway goal nearly midway through the third gave Calgary the lead they needed as Montreal’s Lars Eller and Max Pacioretty brought the visitors within one of levelling the score by 12:06.
Miikka Kiprusoff was strong in the Calgary net as he blocked 24 of 28 shots and his counterpart, Carey Price, fell short on five of 34.
Flames have the next at home against the hot Winnipeg Jets team on Friday while Montreal Canadiens continue their Canadian road trip against Edmonton Oilers on Thursday.
