Jaromir Jagr shines as Philadelphia Flyers edge Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 -NHL Match Update
Jaromir Jagr finally showed why he is termed to be one of the best the National Hockey League (NHL) has ever seen as the 39-year-old scored twice, lifting the Philadelphia Flyers to victory over a heated Toronto Maple Leafs team, 4-2, Monday night at the
sold-out Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.
Unfortunately for the Flyers, who managed to snap their two game losing streak, they lost team captain and veteran forward, Chris Pronger, who had seen a tough time last season due to a number of injuries and as many surgeries, limiting him to only 50 games.
Pronger finally made a much anticipated comeback but is announced to be out for 2-3 weeks after getting hit in the eye by a stick nearly midway through the first period.
Philadelphia Flyers general manager, Paul Holmgren, made the announcement.
"He's going to see the eye doctor every day for the next four days", said Holmgren. "We think after that he'll be … I don't want to say out of danger, but if everything goes OK and the swelling goes down, he should start on an exercise program sometime after
that and we're hoping he could rejoin the team in 10 days to two weeks -- skating-wise, not necessarily playing".
Phil Kessel scored his ninth of the season 6:11 into the first while Jagr answered back for Philadelphia nearly 10 minutes later on their second power play opportunity of the period.
Scott Hartnell also inaugurated his scoring by shooting past Toronto goalie, Jonas Gustavsson, during an added man advantage as Mike Komisarek was booked for interference at the 14:15 mark.
Hartnell added another nearly midway through the third for the game-winner, followed by Toronto’s David Steckel two minutes later to bring the visiting team within reach of one to tie it but Jagr scored his second with less than five minutes to play, securing
the match in their favour.
"I changed everything", Jagr said. "The skate, gloves. I got hit in the head during warm-ups, so that helped".
Flyers play their next game against the Canadiens in Montreal on Wednesday while Toronto Maple Leafs are scheduled for a contest against New York Rangers on Thursday.
