Jaromir Jagr’s comeback in NHL still uncertain, Pittsburgh Penguins make offer –NHL offseason Update
What seemed to be one of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) biggest comebacks now seems more like a quick decision made on the basis of excitement and now that excitement has died down. Jaromir Jagr has been made an offer by Pittsburgh Penguins, but there
is still no word since the day he announced his comeback.
Pittsburgh offered Jagr a one-year, $2 million deal to return to its line-up and play another season with the team and Penguins was ambitious to hear his answer on Wednesday when he would arrive in New York, but nothing was announced or heard of.
"He was an icon in Pittsburgh", Penguins' general manager, Ray Shero, said in an interview on Wednesday. "We'd like to see him finish his career here".
Jagr might have quitted the NHL in 2008, but he certainly did not give up on his passion of ice hockey.
The now 39-year-old attacking forward has been playing with Russian leagues for the past three years after spending over 18 seasons with teams like Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, and New York Rangers.
He might not have played in the NHL for many years, but no one has any doubts about his playing abilities.
"We feel from the information we have and after seeing at world championships, that he's a guy who might be able to help us this coming season", Shero told a local newspaper in an interview on Tuesday. "We feel he's a guy who could help us this year, and
retire as a Penguin".
The 1990 NHL Entry Draft's fifth overall pick of Pittsburgh has played 1,273 NHL games and has registered a total of 1,599 points, 646 goals and 953 assists, which is certainly one of the top records in hockey history.
According to people around Jagr, he has received offers from other teams as well, including Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers.
The free agency will begin on Friday, which will allow Jagr to sign with a team of his choice, but until then, only guesses can be made on where he chooses to fit in.
