Jarrad Hoeata – Player Profile
Jarrad Hoeata is a rugby player for the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU). He plays at the position of a lock and also known to play as a flanker for teams like Taranaki, New Zealand (NZ) Maori, Highlanders, Chiefs and the All Blacks.
Hoeata was born in December 1983 in Tauranga, New Zealand. He attended the Tauranga Boys' College and then shifted to Christchurch in order to finish his teaching degree. His chance to play professional rugby came in 2006 when he was chosen to play for Taranaki
at the position of a flanker. He then went on to represent the team in the Air New Zealand (ANZ) Cup and the Rugby Sevens in 2006. His game took him into the 2007 season, which he was not able to play due to an injury and the recovery process.
The player came back in the 2008 season to see the team through the ANZ Cup of 2008. Here the team and Hoeata made it to the quarter-finals before dropping out of the tournament. Furthermore, he also attended the 2009 season where he played over 10 matches,
which earned him a contract from a Super Rugby franchise.
He then played in the Super 14 in the Chiefs' squad. His debut match with the Chiefs was against the Sale Sharks and he continued as a substitute player for the starting line in five of the six matches of Super 14. His stints in the 2010 season with the
Chiefs was for only the 2010 Super 14 season and with NZ Maori, at the international level in the Centenary Series. He helped the NZ Maori win against both England and Ireland. He also gave an astounding performance in the ITM Cup of 2010.
His previous performances appealed to the Highlander’s coach, Jamie Joseph, who offered Hoeata a place with his team. Previously, Joseph had coached Hoeata when he played for the NZ Maori. He joined the Highlanders in 2010 in order to coach the 2011 season.
The coach saw potential in the player and hired him on to play the position of a lock. The player with almost 48 caps under his belt for his matches with Taranaki helped the Highlanders to many achievements. In fact under the Highlanders, Hoeata trained so
well that he ended up replacing the All Blacks player Tom Donnelly in the squad and sending Donnelly to the benches.
His feats with the Highlanders made him come under the microscope of the All Blacks. The All Blacks coach, Graham Henry, announced the squad for the Tri-Nations 2011 starting on Saturday, July 23. Hoeata was also named along with 29 more players, as those
players to play in the tournament. The first Test before the Tri-Nations is Friday, July 22 and Hoeata is under vigorous training along with the All Blacks to face Fiji in the match. Besides Hoeata, the other lock named for this squad is Ali Williams, who
is making his debut into the All Blacks after a hiatus of two years.
Jarrad Hoeata may be playing in the Tri-Nations 2011 squad but his chances in the Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011 with the All Blacks is unclear. Given his history, Hoeata can be expected to perform well in the Tri-Nations 2011, giving him a chance to perform
in the Rugby World Cup 2011. Coach Graham Henry will announce this squad in August 2011, just before the World Cup 2011 starts.
