Jarred Cosart as top prospect for Houston Astros
Since the 2011 season has past and St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Texas Rangers to take the World Series crown, almost each club has brought changes in their roster, some of them in big numbers while some for just one or two places. Almost each club received
bruises but there are few, which received the biggest wounds in Major League Baseball history, like the Baltimore Orioles, the club associated with the American League East.
In the National League, however the Houston Astros played a season, which the baseball fans had never witnessed before. The club lost 106 games and made just 56 wins, despite having Carlos Lee, Wandy Rodriguez in the plate and Bud Norris on the mound. It
fuelled the rumours to move the club from the National League Central to the American League West, where there are only four clubs. It created somewhat uncertain condition about their next season. Prospective owner Jim Crane, at first did not agree to move
the club, but on November 15, it was reported Crane has formally agreed to move.
Despite facing crucial problems, the Astros still has to keep in mind the upcoming season and to meet their requirement, as the club has started their search of top prospects. With some horrible seasons since 2000, the Astros, as part of some serious steps,
has inspected director Bobby Heck.
As Philadelphia Phillies acquired Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn moved to Atlanta Braves, the 40-man roster now has some room for new comers. It has opened a place for 21-year-old pitcher Jarred Cosart. He is the only prospect, who can present equally valuable
performances in place of Hunter Pence in the 2012 season. Although the Astros seems reluctant to promote him at the big level, Jarred will have to force the front office with something different in Spring Training.
The Philadelphia Phillies, in the 38th round of the 2008 MLB amateur draft, acquired the Texan native. However, the move of Hunter Pence to the Phillies has turned Cosart to the Astros and he can likely visualise pitching in the 2012 season. In
his Minor League career with the Phillies, Jarred posted a 9-8 record with a 3.92 ERA in 108 innings of 20 games. When the Phillies were looking to fill their third starter in the mid of June, Jarred came under serious consideration, but was not given a chance.
Instead, Phillies moved him to Houston Astros, where he took some time to adjust, which put him to 1-2 with an extremely high 4.71 ERA in just seven outings.
While playing for Triple-A Corpus Christi, the right-handed, 6ft 3in pitcher struggled to maintain his momentum. It has been reported that the sudden shift of club, environment and fans might have caused some disturbance to him. However, the Astros front
office rejected all these speculations by putting him at the top of the potential candidate’s list.
With some other faces waiting to be considered, the Astros will take little time to finalise their decision, but according to experts, the draw will ultimately be in the name of Cosart.
It is being reported that MLB has officially contacted Crane to formally move the club into AL West. The move has been decided to balance the entire league, which will allow administration to schedule game on each day of the 2012 season. Currently the AL
has 14 clubs while NL has 16. A shift of one club will balance the entire league.
