Jarrod Fletcher becomes new Australian middleweight by nailing Johannes Mwetupunga – Boxing news
Jarrod Fletcher, the Australian number four middleweight, successfully dethroned his fellow countryman Johannes Mwetupunga off his middleweight reign in a 10-round bout and became the new Australian middleweight champion.
The bout was organised by promoters Barry Michael and Brian Amatruda and the show was televised in Australia on Foxtel Cable Television Network. The ring was setup at The Melbourne Pavilion situated in Flemington, Victoria, Australia.
Jarrod, infamous as the ‘Left Jab’, is a knockout specialist and tries to wear down his opponent by continuous jabbing and pounding. He has been in a total 10 bouts and has never lost. The 28-year-old is considered as one of the best surging brawler in Australia
who has earned much respect in just a short time.
Fletcher has collected seven of his total wins by knockout and is also the proud owner of PABA middleweight title. His opponent on Friday night was Australia’s number seven middleweight Johannes Mwetupunga.
Well known as the ‘Tito’, Johannes has been in a total 13 brawls and came out victorious in 11. Being a resilient fighter who absorbs much punishment and takes the brawl to the last second of the last round, Johannes has collected just five of his total
wins by knockout.
The bout was Jarrod’s very first title shot whereas Johannes was entering the ring to defend his title for the fifth consecutive time. Despite Johannes’ slight upper hand, Jarrod was able to collect a unanimous win.
From the very first round Jarrod overwhelmed and outclassed Johannes in each and every department and outmanoeuvred the 35-year-old veteran by his impressive footwork and agility. The designated judges allocated 98-92, 96-94, and 97-93 to Jarrod and unanimously
crowned him as the new Australian middleweight.
After the brawl while wearing the newly acquired gold, Fletcher excitingly said, “I had great preparation for this fight. You could count on one hand the times Mwetupunga hit me during the fight. My trainer Steve Dellar showed me in training how to defeat
“Tito.”
On sharing his happiness at becoming the new champ Jarrod remarked, "Mate, I can tell you that it feels fantastic," the 2006 Commonwealth Games middleweight gold medallist said. You saw how big he was - I had a plan not to trade punches with him and it worked
beautifully. It (the plan) couldn't have worked any better.”
With this win Fletcher has strengthened his undefeated streak to 11 wins and Johannes has collected his career’s third defeat. It must be kept in mind that Jarrod not only stripped Johannes off his title but also broke his long nine-bout win streak.
