Jarrod Poort acquires Men’s 1500m freestyle gold – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Jarrod Poort of Wests Illawarra acquired gold medal of the Men’s 1500m freestyle on concluding day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Thursday, March 22.
The 17-year-old Poort faced strong confrontation from his competitor Mack Horton of Melbourne throughout the race but with his intellectual efforts, he managed to overwhelm Horton in the final round of the race.
The 15-year-old Horton ended his initial five rounds of the swim by posting a time of 5 minutes and 00.02 seconds. He remained almost three seconds ahead of Poort, who completed the equivalent distance by hitting the wall with the timing of 5 minutes and
03.26 seconds.
The same continued in next five rounds of the swim, where Horton maintained his position and completed his 1000 metres of the swim by posting an effort of 10 minutes and 07.84 seconds.
Poort elevated his pace and succeeded in narrowing the lead of his strongest challenger to almost one second as he wrapped up the equivalent distance by posting an effort of 10 minutes and 08.72 seconds.
Horton continued his supremacy in the following four rounds of the distant freestyle swim, where he ended his 1400 metres of the swim with an effort of 14 minutes and 15.19 seconds. On the contrary, Poort remained 1.30 seconds slower and enveloped the similar
distance with the timing of 14 minutes and 16.49 seconds.
Subsequently, Poort geared up his efforts in the final round and upset Horton by reaching the finishing wall first in a time of 15 minutes and 13.38 seconds. His effort remained almost half minute slower from the Australian record of 14 minutes and 34.56
seconds, owned by Grant Hackett from 2001.
Nevertheless, the silver medal of the discipline was obtained by Horton, who completed his race in 15 minutes and 14.73 seconds. Horton was followed by George O’Brien of Kawana Waters, who ended third by concluding his race in a time of 15 minutes and 18.52
seconds.
In addition, Poort qualified for the Australian team to the 2012 London Olympics and expressed that he will work hard to excel at the upcoming Games.
