Jarrod Saltalamacchia shines as Boston Red Sox defeat Seattle Mariners 12-8 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox catcher, Jarrod Saltalamacchia had a remarkable day with the bat as he had four RBIs with a batting average of .259 and went 3-for-4 in the Red Sox 12-8 win against the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park, Boston on July 24.
The Mariners started well as they scored two runs at the top of the first while the Red Sox batters stepped on the gas and blasted five runs at the bottom of the first inning to take an initial 5-2 lead. Miguel Olivo struck a two-run homer (370 feet) to
left-field and Brendan Ryan scored a single run for the Mariners.
On the other hand, Jacoby Ellsbury added one run on the single-run drive of Adrian Gonzalez. Kevin Youkilis hit a two-run homer (396 feet) towards left-field and Gonzalez posted two runs on the score-board. The fourth and fifth run for the Red Sox was taken
by David Ortiz and Carl Crawford, respectively, when Saltalamacchia singled to right-field.
Second to fourth inning was not in favour of the batters as they were restricted by the pitchers to score runs. The Red Sox starter, Tim Wakefield was expensive as he surrendered seven runs on 10 hits with seven earned runs in his 6 innings pitches. He pitched
the ball with an ERA of 5.15 and struck-out four batters on his 100 pitches.
During the fifth inning, the Mariners’ centre-fielder Franklin Gutierrez scored a single run on the drive of Ryan towards deep left-field. The Red Sox batters again smashed five runs at the bottom of the fifth inning to advance their lead 10-3. Gonzalez,
Youkilis, Ortiz, Crawford and Josh Reddick each singled to complete a five-run campaign for the Red Sox.
The Red Sox got an 11-3 lead in the sixth inning when Gonzalez singled off right-field and Dustin Pedroia added one run. At the top of the seventh, Ryan homered (361 feet) to left-field while Jack Cust, Gutierrez and Ichiro Suzuki each made on run to reduce
their lead. However, Ellsbury singled to shallow centre-field and Reddick posted one run for the Red Sox to move the score-board 12-7 after the seventh inning.
In the ninth inning, Dustin Ackley doubled to deep left-field and Gutierrez scored a single run to cut the Mariners’ deficit 12-8. The Red Sox swept the Mariners 3-0 in the three-game series at Fenway Park.
