Jarrod Saltalamacchia takes Boston Red Sox to 1-0 triumph over Detroit Tigers - MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a beautiful grounder for a leading run in the pitchers dominated 1-0 triumph over the Detroit Tigers at the Fenway Park, on Tuesday, May 18, to take his club into a 1-0 leading position in three-game series.
The game was under full control of the pitchers when catcher Jarrod entered the plate for his third at-bat and smacked to the centre-field off the Tigers’ reliever Ryan Perry for a single in the eighth inning. Jarrod after receiving a strike-out ball in
the sixth inning was in full mood to shatter his no score game.
"It seemed like the first to score was going to win the game," Saltalamacchia said. "Both pitchers pitched great.... They had a lot of situations to score and we had Buck to hold them down."
Boston’s manager Terry Francona was pleased to see the hard hit by the Saltalamacchia. A Jubilant Francona said of Saltalamacchia, "We certainly didn't bludgeon them to death tonight, but Salty took a terrific swing. He is a big strong kid. Carl put it in
another gear because, off the bat, I don't think that's ... sure that he's going to be able to score and we made it hold up."
Boston’ pitcher Clay Buchholz and Detroit’s Phil Coke each threw seven shut-out innings. Buchholz took seven strike-outs, allowed just one walk and allowed four hits to present relatively better performance than Coke. Buchholz, who was making his eighth
start of the season, threw 79 strikes of total 127 pitches over seven innings to secure his ERA to 3.42.
Coke, on the other hand, tossed just 78 pitches over seven innings, in which he allowed three no-score hits and struck out just four batters with 3.88 ERA in his seventh start of the season. However, Coke remained winless, yet he has made a strong game as
compare to his previous games in which he has just one win and five losses.
The Boston’s reliever Daniel Bard followed the same strong path set by the Buchholz and tossed eleven strikes of eighteen pitches to earn his first win of the season with 2.86 ERA. As the conditions were in favour of the pitchers, it became easy for closer
Jonathan Papelbon to hold the Tigers hitless in the last inning to achieve his eighth win of the season.
The Tigers’ reliever Ryan Perry made strong short inning, but Daniel Schlereth received a blow that sent the club under extreme pressure. Closer Al Alburquerque pitched a perfect last inning, however did not receive positive support from the batters.
