Jason Bay and Mike Pelfrey sent to Disabled List following defeat in doubleheader - MLB Update
Two back-to-back losses were not a bigger blow than the one that followed them. Right-hander Mike Pelfrey and left fielder Jason Bay now lurks on the DL after reporting injuries during the game.
While Bay was undone by a full extension latch on the ball, Pelfrey suffered an inflammation in the right elbow.
Pelfrey is one of the rare home-grown arms with the Mets. In an already weakened rotation, losing him for an indefinite time period spells a hard time ahead for the club.
According to initial reports, injury Pelfrey has met will grow worse before getting any better. Ligament damage is very much on the cards and if this turns out to be so, Tommy John Surgery is in the line for him. This will effectively make his season come-back
chances remote.
Mets’ general manager Sandy Alderson while commenting on the injuries termed them a grave inhibition in the progress of the club.
"It's frustrating to lose a doubleheader one day and two players the next," Alderson said.
Mets are going reasonably well so far and may well go to snatch a postseason spot during the end of the regular season.
For Bay, things are not that worse. Non-displaced fracture on the rib he endures at the moment is likely to heal soon.
Un-pleasantly surprised by an immediate decline, Pelfrey believed that he was all feeling great the day before and all of sudden what happened to him was incomprehensible.
"I felt good the other day," Pelfrey said. "I would throw one pitch and it would go away. The ball was coming out good. Everything felt good. There was just a little bit of tightness, which I thought was a little bit of tendinitis."
How long their DL stint is going to be is not yet known.
Flying start of the regular season Mets have enjoyed in the season is sure to suffer negatively with two important players out.
Although the Mets won their next game against the Miami Marlins, stronger teams they will face ahead will test them thoroughly.
Manager Terry Collins will hope to see them back at the earliest.
