Jason Bay graciously accepts New York Mets decision to limit his role - MLB Update
Floundering ever since playing his first game in the season, New York Mets’ left-fielder Jason Bay understands that the decision about his demotion to the platoon role has been taken after he left little reason for team officials to keep faith in him.
With such a dismal batting average that he has maintained in the season so far, one can easily say that he is earning more than he is giving to the team in terms of runs-production.
While largely he endured injuries this year, whenever he earned opportunities he struggled to perform up to the expectations.
He is hitting .156 in the season, way poorer than his career record of .271. Apart from this, the 208 home-runs and the 725 RBIs that he has managed in his career can easily allow one to conclude that he has not shown even a fraction of what he stands for
as a batter.
His slump accelerated the decline of New York in the second half. Immediately after the All-Star break, the Mets stood close to the Atlanta Braves on the table in terms of wins. Therefore, with a couple of winning streaks they could have claimed the second
position in the Division.
However, the Mets’ offence turned indifferent to what the team needed. Other than David Wright and Ike Davis, none of their batters stood up to strike valuable hits.
Among the batters failing to produce hits, Bay was the most unfortunate one. In almost every game, he was wasting at-bats and swinging against the pitches which demanded different treatment.
Meanwhile, New York’s manager Terry Collins says Bay realises the needs of the club at the moment.
“It’ll be fine. Jason Bay is a professional and he understands,” Collins said. “All he wants to do is help the club. We had a conversation on the road and he’s aware what we’re thinking about.”
In this regard, Bay states that Collins allowed him chances to improve his batting average but he squandered them.
“This is not coming out of nowhere. I feel he gave me a lot of opportunities. Time missed with injuries aside, it’s irrelevant. I should be doing better,” Bay said.
Since Bay will be brought against the left handed pitchers only, he can gradually improve his numbers against them.
In this way, he can convince the manager to increase his role in the line-up. It will be interesting to see how he performs in the next couple of games.
