Jason Bay’s contract will not be swallowed as he becomes a platoon player for New York Mets - MLB
The New York Mets’ General Manager Sandy Alderson repels the doubts about eating the left fielder Jason Bay’s contract. He reiterates that there are no such plans underway in this regard and that Bay will be allowed to complete his contract with the club.
In the meantime, the team will be giving Bay the chances on the plate only against left hand pitchers. Against the right-handers, the club will be employing other options.
The current season has been a fairly forgettable story for Bay. Every time he recovers and gets ready for playing, he ends up finding himself injured again.
In the process, he has affected the Mets’ offence in many ways. For a team which largely relies on individual performances, getting someone like Bay injured is unacceptable, to say the least.
Apart from David Wright and Ike Davis, most of their hitters have failed to connect massive hits on regular basis in the season. Therefore, the volatile nature of the season that Bay has gone through so far has not helped the Mets at all.
Unable to stay in the line-up permanently due to the injuries, his typical flair for striking hits has suffered. As a result, he has struggled to make his mark thus far in the season.
Keeping all this in view, one can make out the intention of the management that they will not spend more money on Bay. However, the clarification by the GM Alderson in this regard will be encouraging for Bay.
"Certainly, there are times when it is appropriate to eat a contract," Alderson stated."There are other times when it is not. Jason Bay is not going anywhere, nor is his contract."
Meanwhile, Alderson has narrated how the injuries affected Bay’s performance in the season.
"He is just has not been able to get on the field except for a few games at a time because of the injuries," Alderson said. "It has shown up in his performance. It really has been a hard luck story since he arrived here with a number of injuries that have
caused him to be on the field and off the field on an intermittent basis.”
As Bay will play against the left handed pitchers from now onward, it will be interesting to see as to what extent he can meet the expectations.
