Jason Campbell injures wrist, Raiders concerned
Everyone in Oakland loves Jason Campbell. Players, coaches and fans are all happy to have him as he is taking his football career a lot more seriously than notorious washout JaMarcus Russell ever did. That’s what makes his latest injury a concern as he was injured in the Raiders’ week three pre-season game. While he did take a painful sack from San Francisco’s Travis LaBoy and was carted off the field, the Raiders said a bigger concern was a wrist injury he suffered earlier in the game.
Campbell underwent an MRI and took X-Rays on his wrist and more details will be known later this week. The Raiders don’t know if Campbell will be back for the season opener on 12 September when Oakland will play the Tennessee Titans.
"Usually I recover pretty fast," Campbell said after the game. "Right now there's no timetable. The thing is just to improve and continue to keep getting better. We don't know the timetable or anything, but at the same time, I haven't really missed any time before."
Campbell has been impressive for the Raiders in the pre-season and was off to a great start in his last game. He led the Raiders to a touchdown on their opening possession and completed his first four passes for 67 yards before his injury.
The Raiders will hope that the injury isn’t a fracture as that would leave Campbell out for a while. What makes matters worse is that the injury is on his throwing hand and a fracture may mean a long absence. If Campbell can’t go then Bruce Gradkowski will be the temporary starter.
So far Campbell has earned the praise and respect from his teammates and coaches. His professional attitude is a refreshing change of pace for the Raiders and fans see him as a saviour as his landing in Oakland put an end to the Russell saga in Raider nation. Russell, already deemed to be one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history, was released from Oakland on 5 May.
