Jason Chimera leads Washington Capitals to overtime win over Winnipeg Jets 4-3 -NHL Match Update
It looks like Washington is finally back on track as their veteran left winger, Jason Chimera, potted two goals including the game-winner in overtime to lead the Capitals to a, 4-3, win over the Winnipeg Jets, Wednesday night, November 23, 2011, at the sold-out
Verizon Center in Washington, District of Columbia, United States.
The two points to move into the sixth place in the Eastern Conference did not come easy for the Capitals as the Jets kept on rebounding and nearly took Washington by extending the match into an uncertain overtime decider.
Winnipeg on the other hand was on its way to winning their fourth straight after three back-to-back victories for their best record in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season yet.
"It was tough," Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said after the matchup, "because every time we scored, they came back. It takes a lot of, I don't know if the word is intestinal fortitude, character or whatever, to keep coming back."
Alexander Semin scored in the opening minutes of the first period to Washington ahead, but was followed by Winnipeg captain, Andrew Ladd at the 13:21 mark, but again the Capitals managed to take the lead as Chimera potted his first of the night only 12 seconds
later.
Kyle Wellwood ended the standoff with an equaliser with less than four minutes to play, giving the impression to the home crowd that the Jets would not be shot down without a fight.
Nicklas Backstrom gave Washington the lead once again 3:08 into the second but was followed by Bryan Little a little over midway through the third, which resulted in the overtime extension.
"We don't change our game plan because things don't go our way at the moment," Washington goalie Tomas Vokoun said. "We were just patient and, no matter what is going on, we play the same way and it works for us."
Washington is looking for their next victory against the New York Rangers on Friday while the Winnipeg Jets will have a chance to bounce back against the Carolina Hurricanes on the same day, which will certainly be interesting to see.
