Jason Day angers Paul Casey out of second round of Accenture Match Play Championship
Jason Day relished a success in annoying world number six Paul Casey during the second round of the Accenture Match Play Championship.
Day had the whole game-plan in his mind before the start of the round. He expected that if his opponent lost his cool, he would let go of his strategy and commit silly mistakes. But much to his surprise it did happen so.
The Aussie executed his plan by emulating the walk-in-front-of-the-opponent, but could not retrieve results from it. According to Day, he applied the same strategy on Kyung-tae Kim in the first round, which really offended him unlike Casey.
Day said that he tried walking in front of Casey, which is considered against the etiquettes of Golf, but the trick did not work as Casey walks very fast and Day could not catch up. Hence, the cunning Day opted for a ‘Plan B’ he had devised in case of failure.
He putted from a range of 1.5 feet at the 13th hole, instead of a regular tap-in, which is a norm in match play format. This offended Casey and Day cashed in on the opportunity, earning two points in the back. He wrapped the second round with a score of
4 & 2.
Day later told the press, “He looked really angry at me. It was only about a foot and a half. I knew he was going to hole it, but it is not about that hole. It is about future holes coming in. If I can make him a little angry, get him out of his game plan
and force him to make silly decisions out there, that's part of the mind games that you play.”
This is Day’s first attempt at the World Golf Championship and he knows that devising a good strategy is essential to reach the weekend.
The 23-year-old winner of 2010 HP Byron Nelson Championship commented on his attitude and said, “The competition is very, very tough. Just being out there reminds me of all the old days when I was back playing as an amateur and as a junior. If you are a
nice guy, you've got to have a bit of prick in you. At the end of the day, you're all mates, but when you're playing against the guy, you want to beat him as quick as possible.”
Day has proceeded towards the third round where he will face JB Holmes.
