Jason Day hopes to emulate Martin Kaymer’s exceptional performance to land the HP Byron Nelson title
Australian Jason Day may have encountered close misses in the major events so far but he is definitely on a learning trail for the moment, and has proven to be a sturdy student so far.
With consecutive runner up finishes in the major events last year, the 24-year-old Queensland native believes his strong performances last season were a direct result of his pairing with the former world number one Martin Kaymer in 2010 PGA Championship
which, the later won in a Playoff against Bubba Watson.
Day has been laid off from professional golf for almost two months now following his untimely injury in the first round of the Masters. He will be back at his favourite hunting ground, TPC Four Seasons Resort in Irving, the venue of the HP Byron Nelson Championship.
Day said, “Yeah, playing with Martin that day, obviously I saw a lot of good shots and a lot of bad shots that he hit. He was struggling a little bit with the left-to-right winds and hitting his drives way right. He saved himself a lot with his short game.
He holed a nice putt on the last hole and just won the event”.
Although Kaymer has experienced a downslide in his career since the start of the current season and has missed the halfway cut at Abu Dhabi, where he has won three times in his last four appearances, but he certainly has taught Day how to stay in his groove.
Day won the HP Byron Nelson title some two years ago for his first PGA Tour victory and has since then, done a stunning job to stay in contention in major events the next season.
He added, “That's the thing. You don't have to do much on Sunday. You just have to keep your head in there, and if you have a bad start, then don't worry about it, just keep playing".
After turning professional in the year 2006, Day has pulled in some exceptional performances under pressure to challenge the grizzled veterans on numerous occasions and is eyeing his second PGA Victory at TPC Four Seasons.
Day along with Adam Scott is one of the most notable players to have come out from Australia in recent times.
