Jason Day likely to miss the British Open due to first child’s birth – Golf News
The Australian professional golfer, Jason Day, announced that he may miss the British Open, slated to be held in the third week of July, if it conflicts with the date of his first child’s birth.
According to Day, his wife, Ellie, is expecting a baby on July 11, 2012, which is just a week before the tournament begins at Royal Lytham St. Anne at Lancashire.
Therefore, he only wants to be at the side of his wife at that time and the tournament means secondary to him.
"If the baby is coming that week, I will definitely be missing the British Open," Day said. "There is no way I will miss the birth of my first child. Golf is one thing but family is everything to me".
“Golf isn't going to be there if I break my leg or if I lose the plot and forget how to swing a club - my family will be there. It is family first every time,” he added.
He also said that he had a successful season in 2011, where he recorded runner-up finishes in the Masters Tournament, US Open, Australian Open and PGA Championship.
Moreover, he also recorded eight other top 10 finishes and moved to the eighth position in the Official World Golf Rankings at the end of the year.
With a runner-up position in the Qatar Masters this month, he has moved to his career-high seventh in the OWGR.
Yet, Day says that he has not achieved the height he wants, as it will come with the birth of his first child.
"I am a little nervous and a little scared but, obviously, also thrilled," he said. "It is our first baby so I don't know what to expect but it is very very exciting".
He added by saying that he feels really excited when he thinks of his baby and gets a unique kind of boost in his mood and behaviour.
Currently, he is in Los Angeles preparing to make his first start on the PGA Tour through the Northern Trust Open at the Riviera Country Club starting from Thursday, February 16, 2012.
