Jason Day makes excellent start, finishes poorly on the first day of the HP Byron Nelson Championship – Golf News
Jason Day, who got off to a stunning start at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, marred his hard-earned position when he finished off with a double bogey and a bogey on the final two holes in the opening round on Thursday, May 17, 2012.
Day started off with two consecutive birdies on the first two holes of the round. Through 10 holes, he was five under with the help three more birdies.
However, a bogey on the 11th hole took his score back to four under. Yet, he did not lose the focus and kept on playing good shots at the TPC Four Seasons Resort in Irving, Texas.
Right after that, he carded the sixth and last birdie of the round on the 16th hole, he did something that no one could have expected him to do at that stage.
He miscalculated the tee shot on the par-three 17th that went over the green. He then made a good chip shot to land the ball 6'7" away from the hole. There, he missed the easy par putt and suffered the second bogey of the round.
On the par-four 18th hole, the luck seemed against him, as the drive found the water hazard on the course forcing him to turn in the ball in six shots.
Normally, the two-under par score is considered a good one at the course where winds blow at heavy speeds.
However, the golf commentators believe that Day should have managed to score better as the winds were light in the evening when his group started its play.
Overall, Day had a good start and he should take out the positives out of his performance that may help him in the upcoming rounds of the event.
He is currently four strokes behind the leader Ryan Palmer who fired a bogey-free six-under par 64.
The defending champion Keegan Bradley had a mixed round, as he recorded a total of five birdies and an eagle against four bogeys to settle for a three-under par 67. He is currently tied for the 11th position on the leaderboard along with 12 other
players.
