Jason Day sinks Paul Casey at the Accenture Match Play Championship
Jason Day’s mind games did well for him as he sank the world number six, Englishman Paul Casey, in the second round of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship at the Ritz Plaza Golf
Club's Blue Monster in Dove Mountain in Arizona. Day forced Casey to putt from a distance of one and half feet on a par-5 13th, something which is normally conceded in a Match play. The tactic, however, did not go down well with the Englishman,
who looked visibly annoyed and did not talk to the media afterwards. The 23-year-old Aussie was all smiles as he came out victorious, owing his success to the ‘mind games’ he played with Casey.
“He looked really angry at me, too”, remarked Jason, "It was only about a foot and a half. ... But it's not about that hole, it's about the future holes coming on. So if I can make him
a little angry, if I can get him out of his game plan and force him to make silly decisions out there, that's obviously part of the mind games that you play”.
Jason won the match by a decent lead of 4 & 2, to join Friday’s third round of the Championship along with fellow Australian Geoff Ogilvy. Jason’s mind games have been paying off well
lately, a tactic he usefully employed during his first round match against South Korean Kyung-tae Kim by always walking ahead of him on the course. He tried to make Casey trail behind him too but with less success.
"Paul walks pretty quick, so it was pretty tough to stay in front of him," he stated afterwards with a devilish smile. "If you're a nice guy, you've got to have a bit of prick in you,"
he said.
The young Aussie has been steadily ascending the leader board as the bigwigs of the game kept tumbling. He won the Byron Nelson Championship last year, recording his first PGA Tour title.
In 2007 he won the Nationwide tour event in Ohio to become the youngest to win the title in the tour's history.
Jason Day will now face the American, J.B Holmes, yet another prodigy of the Championship, in the third round of the game.
