Jason Day withdraws from the Open Championship
There were speculations that Jason Day will not feature in this year’s British Open, because his wife was due to give birth to their first child. Therefore, Jason announced that he will not be taking part in the Open Championship, to be played at Royal Lytham
and St Annes.
Just like Webb Simpson, who has also speculated that he will miss the Open because his wife is due to give birth, Jason Day’s first priority is his family.
This is the first child of Jason Day and to become a father is probably one of the best feelings ever in a man’s life. He wants to spend the time with his wife and his newly born child. His wife has been extremely supportive of him throughout his career.
The world number 21 has chosen to stay back home even though his wife and child are doing well. Jason feels that this is not the right time to play golf and he will return to the course when he feels the time is right.
"Obviously I would love to be playing in the British Open but as I have said all along family comes first and I want to be with Ellie and Dash right now to enjoy this wonderful miracle," Day said.
The Australian hinted in February that his participation at the Open was in extreme doubt because his wife was expecting a child.
"Golf is not going to be there if I break my leg or if I lose the plot and forget how to swing a club. My family will be there. Its family first every time," explained Jason.
Marc Leishman, the fellow Australian, was picked to replace Jason at the Open. However, Marc had to sweat on before he finally got the green signal to play at the Royal Lytham and St Annes.
Leishman had applied for a green card and according to a rule, green applicants cannot leave USA until and unless they are issued a green card.
However, Marc’s case was a special one and he has been cleared to take part in the British Open.
Jason is expected to play at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, being held on the 2nd till the 5th of August. This will be the first competitive appearance for Jason on a golf course after becoming a father.
