Jason Donald accepting bench role possibility
Jason Donald may not have been lucky in 2011 following a serious finger injury in Spring Training, but he is looking forward to the next season, even if he is put on the bench. The second basemen will most likely start as a utility man and that possibility
sits well with him. The infielder spoke to the press on Wednesday, November 9, and he had a lot to say about his predicament following an unusual year.
The player was out of Spring Training early on in the season due to injury on his finger. That sideline meant his chance at a regular role at the third base was foregone. In his stead, upcoming star, Lonnie Chisenhall got the call. With opportunities depleting
this year, the second baseman will be looking hard down at the path he is as youngsters take the infield positions.
Jack Hannahan was in a Minor League contract, this year but he will be back up in 2012 to take his place on the base. Following him will be the duo of Asdrubal Cabrera and Jason Kipnis. Both will be manning the shortstop and the second basemen positions,
respectively. Nevertheless, Donald is eyeing a chance back at the Major Leagues.
He has been part of instructional League practice and he is gaining ground on the outfield position. Whatever the case may be, Donald is looking at options, next year.
"Lonnie and Jason have a chance to be stars in this game," Donald said. "I think Asdrubal has established himself as one of the premiere shortstops in the game, without a doubt. ... Those guys should be everyday guys going into next year. I think they've
proven themselves this year.
"At the same time, I have to prepare myself. I have to be ready to go when my name is called. But it's not something I really look at too much, just because I never thought this year was going to play out the way it did. I'm very cautious to plan and to
look into the future."
Donald played 39 games in 2011, rowing in 13 runs, one home run and eight RBIs. His hitting average was .318.
