Jason Dufner and Hunter Mahan in contention for third win of the season – Golf News
Jason Dufner birdied the final hole of his campaign at the HP Byron Nelson Championship last week to register the second PGA Tour win of his career.
Now, Dufner is scheduled to participate in the Crowne Plaza Invitational along with some other big names of the game.
With a win at the TPC Four Seasons Resort, he became the only player, after Hunter Mahan, to register two wins in the 2012 PGA Tour season so far.
The only difference between Dufner and Mahan is that Dufner has enjoyed the wins in the past four weeks, whereas, Mahan did it early in the season and the last win came in early April.
Both the players, despite having solid profiles, have been in some kind of competition right from the start. Although different in rankings, Dufner and Mahan share many skills, from strength to work ethic and playing style on the course.
According to their PGA Tour stats, both are short drivers. However, when it comes to accuracy, they are one of the best on the PGA Tour.
The golf commentators believe that both the players will be seen in contention at the Colonial Country Club. Yet, Dufner has an edge over Mahan with greater chances of recording the third win of the season.
The major reason of Mahan’s lower chances is the declining performances that he gave following his Shell Houston Open win.
In April, he appeared in the Masters Tournament and finished tied for the 12th position. Thereafter, he participated in the Wells Fargo Championship and tied for the 53rd position.
The tournament that he played was the Players Championship that witnessed him missing the cut after recording 74-76 in the opening two rounds.
Therefore, Mahan will have to work a little extra in order to get back in shape and record some low scores in the upcoming tournament.
For the last two years, the tournament officials have brought some changes to the venue course that includes the introduction of fairway bunkers.
Therefore, it will greatly support Dufner and Mahan’s cause as it will restrain the long hitters to make the short drives same as both these players make.
