Jason Dufner falters in the final round at Colonial to miss the third victory
Jason Dufner faltered in the final round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational, as he messed up his leaderboard position to take the runner-up’s spot at the Colonial Country Club on Sunday, May 27, 2012.
Dufner started his final round with a one-stroke lead over Zach Johnson and went one-under par through eight holes, with the help of two birdies against a lone bogey.
However, a double bogey on the ninth hole took him back from one-stroke lead, and now he is trailing Johnson one stroke behind.
A triple bogey on the 15th hole completely spoiled his round and he went further away from Johnson, with only three holes to play.
Johnson recorded a bogey and suffered a two-stroke penalty during the final three holes of the day. Yet, he succeeded to win the event, as Dufner failed to card any further birdies that would have forced the game to enter the playoffs.
Overall, it was the worst round Dufner played in the last four tournaments, especially when he was enjoying a great form on the PGA Tour.
Dufner won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and HP Byron Nelson Championship in the three-week stretch, prior to coming to Colonial.
Therefore, he was considered the hottest player in the field and he proved it so during the first three rounds of the event. However, a couple of bad shots cost him the third victory of his career.
“Yes, definitely the last month of golf, the last three months of golf has been a pretty good run,” he said.
“Today, obviously, a little disappointing to play that poorly and not kind of have a chance there at the end. I thought we were looking at another duel kind of coming into 18 with Zach and I because we were both back and forth, kind of struggling, both of
us a little bit. But it wasn't meant to be today and that's about it”.
Despite a defeat in the final round, Dufner has managed to book a place among the top-10 players in the Official World Golf Rankings, as he is now listed at the eighth position.
