Kenyan freestyle specialist, Jason Dunford defeated Krisztian Takacs of Hungary in the Men’s 100m freestyle final on the first day of the 2011 Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) Swimming World Cup. The session concluded on Friday, October 7, in
Dubai.
The 24-year-old Dunford, who booked his qualification spot by overwhelming the efforts of his competitors in the preliminary rounds, proved his mettle in the final round and reached the podium for bronze medal. Dunford was slightly ahead of his following
swimmer, Takacs and hit the wall with his terrific 47.95 seconds effort to gain the title.
His effort was 2.49 seconds slower than the World Cup record of 45.46 seconds, set by Australia’s Matthew Abood at Singapore, in 2009. On the other hand, Takacs was only 0.37 seconds slower than Dunford on the finishing wall, securing the podium for silver
medal by clocking a time of 48.32 seconds.
The 26-year-old Takacs overruled Dunford in the initial half of the swim, where the Hungarian completed his first round in a time of 22.98 seconds, out-touching his competitor with a difference of 0.04 seconds.
However, the Kenyan went rampant in the second-half of the race, defending his fastest qualification spot. He sprinted his way to the final 50m of the race with a timing of 24.93 seconds while Takacs ended his last 50 metres in 25.34 seconds.
Nevertheless, with his commendable swim, Takacs overwhelmed the effort of second fastest qualifying swimmer, Hong Kong’s Kai Wai David Wong, who remained 0.25 seconds slower than him and reserved third spot on the podium. Wong clocked a time of 48.57 seconds
for bronze medal of 100m discipline.
Dunford was extremely delighted with his first victory of the World Cup series while the crowd also appreciated his dominance in the 100m swim.
After the completion of the session, winners were awarded medals and cash prizes for their laudable efforts in the freestyle race. In addition, the championship will conclude after the completion of its second day on October 8.
