Jason Dunford ousts Kai Wai David Wong in Men’s 100m freestyle heats - FINA World Cup, Dubai
Delhi Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Jason Dunford of Kenya beat Kai Wai David Wong of Hong Kong in the preliminary rounds of 100m freestyle on the opening day of the 2011 Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) Swimming World Cup.
The FINA/ARNEA World Cup is a seven stop series, which started on Friday, October 7, in Dubai. The 25-year-old Dunford made demonstrated his scintillating efforts in the dual-lap freestyle discipline. The Kenyan athlete showed his strength to the crowd by
spoiling the party of his challengers with a timing of 49.34 seconds.
He had no difficulty in shattering the hopes of his strongest rival, Wong, who kept chasing him throughout the 100m swim and failed to prove his mettle for the top qualification. With his plunged effort in the first lap of the swim, Dunford ended the hopes
of his competitors who were eyeing the fastest qualifying berth into the final.
In the initial lap of the swim, Dunford rushed his way towards the other end of the pool, completing his first-half of the race in 23.24 seconds. With his spectacular swim, he remained 0.48 seconds ahead of his competitor, Wong, who followed him on the first
turn with a timing of 23.72 seconds.
He continued his sprint in the second lap, where he covered the 50m distance with a timing of 26.10 seconds, posting an effort of 49.34 seconds on the board. Wong stayed behind at a difference of 0.62 seconds, earning the second qualification spot with a
timing of 49.96 seconds.
Similarly, the second fastest qualifier was 0.94 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, UAE’s Tiago Ferrao, who made his way to the finishing end with a third phenomenal effort of 50.82 seconds.
Dunford seemed satisfied with his top qualifying effort in the 100m freestyle. The top eight swimmers of prelims will compete with each other in the final round, where the top finishers will be awarded medals. Furthermore, the first leg of FINA World Cup
will conclude tomorrow, whereas, the next stop will be at Stockholm, on October 15.
