Jason Garrett named as Dallas Cowboys head coach
On Thursday, Jason Garrett was named as the eighth head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He earned the job after winning five games and losing three since taking over the Cowboys in the second part of the 2010 season.
He was named interim head coach after coach Wade Phillips was fired on November 8 for starting the season 1-7.
Owner and general manager Jerry Jones wanted a change in culture around their training facility at Valley Ranch which is why he decided to remove the interim tag from Garrett’s title and leave him as head coach. The past eight games made his decision final.
"He's truly one of our own," Jones said of Garrett. "We know him well for the qualifications that he has for this position, and I know that he has spent his entire life preparing for this day. He's well qualified."
Garrett had been a backup quarterback for the ‘Boys for seven seasons from 1993 to 1999.
Jones has so much faith in Garrett he says that the new head coach will be the one who makes the final decision on the coaching staff and roster.
"Jason will have the final say on any person that leaves the coaching staff or comes to the coaching staff," Jones said. "There won't be a player on this team that Jason does not want on the team."
Garrett had been the highest paid assistant coach in the NFL, earning $3.5 million a year. His new contract is for four years but the monetary terms were not made public.
He will still call all of the offensive plays for the team making it possible for the Cowboys to not have an offensive coordinator. However, both Garrett and Jones said that there have been no decisions to change the coaching staff.
The Cowboys had aspirations to get to the Super Bowl in the 2010 season but a 0-2 start turned into a 1-7 record at the halfway mark. That’s when Garrett took over and made the team 6-10.
After the firing of Phillips, Garrett said that he wanted to fix the team. He did a remarkably good job after winning his first game over the New York Giants.
The ‘Boys just didn’t give up and won five games under Garrett, three of which were on the road including their season finale win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
The three losses for the team were by a total of only seven points. They lost to the New Orleans Saints in Week 12 and the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 14 by three points each. They lost to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 16 by only one point.
The Cowboys are done for this season but hope to rest up and practice to fight for the Super Bowl next season.
