Jason Giambi’s seven RBIs helps Colorado Rockies beat Philadelphia Phillies, 7-1 – MLB Update
Colorado Rockies’ first baseman, Jason Giambi was extraordinary with his bat as he hit three homers and seven RBIs in the Rockies’ 7-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, on May 19.
Giambi started the game at first base in place of Todd Helton, who suffered a back injury. He expressed his excitement as, “It's nice to contribute and get an opportunity to play. It's exciting, something you dream about. I was up there letting it fly, giving
it some whacks. I just needed to get some at-bats.”
In the first inning, the Rockies took a 3-0 lead. Giambi hit a one-run homer to right-field while Troy Tulowitzki and Dexter Fowler both combined to add two runs for the Rockies to give his team some winning hope. The pitchers also contributed equally as
they restricted the Phillies’ batters from scoring a run in the first three innings.
Jimmy Rollins flied out to right-field and Michael Martinez grounded out to short-stop position during first inning. The second inning was scoreless but in the third inning, the Rockies added another two runs to take their lead, 5-0. Giambi struck his second
homer of the game towards the right-field spot and Carlos Gonzalez singled to complete a two-run campaign.
The Rockies’ Manager Jim Tracy was content with the way Giambi batted throughout the game. During the press conference, Tracy said, “Those were dynamic swings, the type of swings he's taken as a regular player where anytime that bat is moving forward it's
dangerous if the ball gets centred.”
The Phillies scored their first run during the fourth inning and cut their shortfall to 5-1, when Placido Polanco made a single run on the grounder of Raul Ibanez. The Rockies extended their lead to 7-1 in the fifth inning by scoring two runs. Giambi hit
his third homer while Tulowitzki scored one run off the left-centre field spot. The last four innings passed without a score for both the teams.
The Rockies’ starter, Jhoulys Chacin also played his role as he pitched seven solid innings with an ERA of 2.70. He permitted only one run on four hits including one earned run and one walk. Chacin struck-out nine batters from his pitches.
