Jason Gore and Aaron Watkins share the clubhouse lead at the Midwest Classic
Jason Gore sank four straight birdies to end the opening round Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate, to share the clubhouse lead after the opening round of the Midwest Classic, presented by Cadillac, on Thursday, August 16, 2012.
The play was suspended due to bad weather in the afternoon and the officials were forced to call off the day in the evening.
As a result, 69 players failed to complete their rounds and were provided with tee times early Friday morning to complete their first round.
In addition to that, the second-round tee times were also moved back by one hour because of the expected clash between the first and second round.
Gore, who is playing the Web.com Tour on a major medical extension, struggled early in the round and remained at two-under par through the first 14 holes with the help of four birdies against two bogeys.
He then made a strong charge on the leaderboard with the help of four straight birdies and got into the share of the lead with Aaron Watkins at six-under par 65.
"I hit some really good shots today and made all the putts I needed to," Gore said. “The greens are perfect and I hit some shots that were really close and had a couple of 'leaners' which always makes it nice. I also played the par 5s pretty well".
On the other hand, Watkins was the first one to complete his round on Thursday, as he was among the first pairings of the day.
He recorded a flawless round with six birdies and took the clubhouse lead early in the day. The highlight of his performance includes four birdies on the final six holes.
"It was a good start for me and I'll take 6-under on a day like this," Watkins said. "I've been doing a lot of things right all year long and lately it's been my putter which has been lacking a bit. I've been hitting the ball well but just not making any
putts".
He was great with his putter the whole day and required only 24 putts to complete his round.
