Jason Harris and Robert Patterson step into Round 3 of ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic – Surfing News
America’s Jason Harris and Hawaii’s Robert Patterson walked away with top honours from their respective Round 2 (Round of 128) heats of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic that continued at Huntington Beach Pier in California,
America, on Wednesday, March 28.
Both Harris and Patterson advanced through into the next round (Round of 96) of the event after clinching victory in their Round 2 heats. America’s Hunter Lysaught and his fellow countryman Derek Peters made their way into the next round after securing runner-up
positions in the seventh and eighth heat respectively.
The competition veterans along with the local and international up-and-coming talent found themselves battling clean two-to-four foot waves on the opening day of the event. The low frequency of decent waves presented the surfers with a tough challenge, keeping
them on their toes through the heat.
Pitted against Lysaught, Japan’s Kaito Ohashi and Basque County’s Ethan Egiguren in the seventh heat, the 23-year-old Harris managed post a 6.43 on the score-board off his first business-wave and added an additional 8.17 points to his account in the dying
minutes of the heat to finish with a winning heat-total of 14.60 points.
“I lost so many times last year in the last 30 seconds and I knew the rights were fat and if I stuck to the lefts I could force a couple of backside turns,” Harris said. “I’m just stoked. It’s never over until it’s over. It was good to have that Round 1
heat. I have a little bit of a seed, but to get my feet in the wax this morning and get a few waves was really good for my confidence.”
Lysaught secured his place in the next round as well after collecting a couple of scores in the seven-point range to finish with a heat-total of 14.10 points.
Ohashi and Egiguren were forced to step out of the competition field after their bottom-two finish, with the Japanese surfer scoring a heat-total of 11.70 points while the latter finished with a heat-total of 9.13 points.
The eighth heat saw Patterson walk away with the win after scoring a 5.10 and 6.17 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 11.27 points.
Peters finished right behind him in second place with a heat-total of 10.74 points, which included a 5.87 and 4.87-point wave.
Japan’s Arashi Kato and America’s Matt Myers got added to the elimination list after finishing with a heat-total of 8.23 and 6.24 points respectively.
