Jason Kidd charged with driving while intoxicated; Pleads not guilty – NBA News
New York Knicks newly acquired point guard Jason Kidd was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI), according to the Southampton Town Police.
A spokesperson of the Police Department said that Kidd was involved in a car accident at around 2 am on Sunday when his car hit a telephone pole and then lost control and wound up in the woods in Hamlet of Water Mill, close to
Southampton Village.
Kidd is said to have received minor injuries and was treated at the Southampton Hospital, after which he was taken to the Police Station.
"Jason was involved in a single vehicle accident on his way back home from a charity function last night. He suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital. Jason has pleaded not guilty to a DWI charge
and awaits further court proceedings,” said Kidd’s attorney Ed Burke Jr.
The New York Knicks, the team who recently acquired Kidd in free agency, were unavailable for comments, as was his agent.
Kidd if found guilty can face up to a year in jail for the charge. No further details about the court proceedings are known at this point of time.
The veteran one guard helped the Dallas Mavericks win the 2010-2011 NBA championship. He played with the Mavs last season as well, but decided to move to the Knicks this offseason to the surprise of many fans around the league.
He has signed a three year deal worth $9 million where he will take up the backup point guard position while also help mentor the younger point guards in the Knicks roster, particularly recently acquired Raymond Felton and Jeremy
Lin – i.e. if the Knicks decide to retain him by matching the offer of the Houston Rockets.
Kidd is a decorated NBA player, with two Olympic gold medals to his name. He is ranked 2nd on the NBA All Time list in both assists and steals. He will be entering his 19th season in the NBA when he takes
the court in the Knicks jersey in October, when the NBA season officially commences.
