Jason Kidd eyeing a possible return to the Dallas Mavericks – NBA News
Now that Deron Williams has decided to stay put in Brooklyn with the Nets and the chances of Jason Kidd and Williams ending up on the same team are bleak, Kidd is hoping to re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks for one or two more
years.
The 39 year old All Star veteran guard was eyeing a possible team up with close friend and top free agent Deron Williams this year. However, Williams refused the Mavericks offer of a 4 year $75 million contract and instead decided
to sign with the Nets for a five year contract worth $98 million.
Kidd is now looking to finish his career with the Mavericks, with whom he won a championship in 2011.
"I’ve always loved playing with Dallas and I’d love to finish my career there. So hopefully (agent) Jeff (Schwartz) and (Mavs owner Mark) Cuban can get something done,” said Kidd on Wednesday.
Besides the Mavericks, Kidd is also in talks with the New York Knicks over a possible two year contract. The Knicks were earlier interested in Steve Nash but the Phoenix Suns decided to trade him to the Los Angeles Lakers at his
request. On the other hand, the Dallas Mavericks are also interested in Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin, who had a breakthrough season with the Knicks but suffered an injury to his knee that ended his journey before the playoffs begin.
Kidd said he is feeling great physically and believes he can still play as a starting point guard in the NBA. He is said to be eyeing a 2 year deal with the Mavericks that would have him finish with 20 seasons in the NBA, a feat
in itself. There were talks of a possible one year deal as well but Kidd said that most of the scenarios were made up with the condition that Williams would join the Mavericks.
With Williams opting to stay with the Nets and Jason Terry on the verge of signing a three year deal with the Boston Celtics, the Dallas Mavericks have had an unsuccessful free agency season so far, although they are reported to
be trying for Orlando Magic Center Dwight Howard.
However, Kidd still believes that owner Mark Cuban and General Manager Donnie Nelson will put together a strong championship contending team.
"Cuban is always going to be a competitor; he’s always going to try to win. So no matter what happens as of right now, it always can change in the NBA fast. I’ve always thought he’s going to put a competitive team out there and
he has since I’ve been with him,” said Kidd.
It is unknown what salary Kidd is expecting from the Mavericks for his next contract and what demand he has put forward, but he did say that Dallas knows about his future plans and expectations and he is now waiting on them.
