Jason Kidd set to fight charges of driving under influence of alcohol – NBA News
The New York Knicks newly acquired point guard Jason Kidd is planning to fight the charge that he was drunk when he crashed his SUV into a pole in the Hamptons while driving back from a charity event a few months ago.
Kidd made an appearance at the Southampton Town Court on Long Island for the first day of his trial, but did not say anything.
Edward Burke Jr, who is representing Kidd in the case, talked to reporters and said:
“We are defending that. He is taking this very, very seriously. He wants to get this past him as quickly as possible. The legal process takes some time but he is ready for his season.”
Kidd was arrested in July, days after signing with the New York Knicks, after his SUV hit a telephone pole and then veered into the woods in the hamlet of Water Mill. He suffered a few minor injuries in the accident, and was later
charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. If found guilty, Kidd could face up to a year in prison.
Kidd was acquired by the New York Knicks in free agency this summer for a three year deal worth $3 million a year. The deal came as a surprise to the Dallas Mavericks fans, his team prior to joining the Knicks.
Kidd is quite familiar with the New York area as he played for the New Jersey Nets and led them to two NBA Finals appearance in the early part of the 2000’s. In Dallas, Kidd helped the Mavs win the 2010-2011 NBA championship. He
is ranked second in the NBA all time assists and steals list.
Kidd, a two time gold medallist, has been involved in a domestic abuse case in the past. In 2001, while playing for the Phoenix Suns, Kidd was arrested on a domestic violence charge and accepted that he had hit his former wife.
However, he is looking forward to moving ahead from the latest charges as he has an exciting season with the Knicks waiting. Kidd will provide a star studded Knicks roster a general and playmaker on the floor, while also using his extensive playoff experience
to help them make a deep run in the playoffs this upcoming season.
