Jason Kidd willing to give up starting position if he returns to Dallas Mavericks – NBA News
Jason Kidd, the veteran Dallas Mavericks point guard, has said that he does not mind sitting out at the start the game, but would want to be there at the close of the game in crunch time situations.
Kidd was promoting the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament scheduled to take place in Lake Tahoe next month, and said:
“I'd be fine with starting or not starting, but I want to be able to finish the game. I'm all about winning at this point.”
Kidd also talked about the Dallas Mavericks plans of picking up Deron Williams in free agency next month. Williams is a point guard of the Brooklyn Nets and is all set to become a free agent this summer, making him the hottest
basketball player on the free agency market.
The Mavs have been eyeing Williams for some time now, and with comfortable cap space, they hope to sign him and pair up with Dirk Nowitzki. If that happens, it will make the Mavericks a title contender immediately.
Kidd said that he would not mind giving up his starting position to Williams, adding that he would be comfortable in being his backup. But, he went on to say that both him and Williams can make a substantial impact in the dying
stages of games.
“If it's for me to start or for me not to start, I don't have a problem with that. But being the competitor, I want to be in there at the end of the game to help my team win and help my teammates be successful. So I would be fine
with starting or not starting, but I do want to finish the game. ... But also, to come in down the stretch, to be able to play alongside a guy like that (Williams), I think we can play off each other and be successful. That's something we can look at if that's
something that gets done,” said Kidd.
Kidd is all set to be a free agent next month as well.  The Mavericks have Jason Terry and Delonte West at guard position already.
If they end up landing Williams, their point guard trouble will be sorted after they will need to sit down and think about which players they still want in the team.  With Williams being the point guard, Kidd’s role will be to
hit open jump shots and spread the floor when both players are on the court together.
The return of Kidd however is not a straight forward issue. The Mavericks will need to look into their options and the plans for future. At 40, Kidd might not be the ideal fit for a shooting guard slot and with Jason Terry available
in the free market as well, the Mavs will have to make a tough decision.
As far as the reserve one guard position is concerned, the Mavs can use Delonte West and Rodrigue Beaubois,
