Jason McAteer frets over future of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres
Ex-Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer has expressed his concern that the club’s star duo, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, might leave the club if there is no change in fortunes at Anfield.
“Gerrard and Torres want to start winning things. They want to win trophies. Unfortunately for Liverpool, [they’re] probably as far away from winning the Premier League as [they] have been for a long, long time.”
The former Republic of Ireland international went on to claim that Liverpool may have to brace themselves for a few January transfer bids for the pair. Should either player, or both, leave the club, it might push an already disastrous state of affairs to
reach the breaking point.
“I think Liverpool [must] be very wary in January that there aren't big clubs coming in for these two players and if that happens, they are going to really start crumbling," McAteer declared.
With Liverpool currently languishing in the relegation zone, and with just one win in their opening seven games, things are looking bleak enough already on Merseyside, without talk of their only two world-class players leaving for greener pastures. But if
the current ownership situation continues to drag on, it's hard to imagine the club getting back to where they need to be.
A point McAteer himself made was, "It needs to be sorted sooner rather than later, because Liverpool will find themselves not only struggling in the league table, but in the financial market as well, where they can't go and bid for players and can't then
attract players to come to the club.”
Time will tell if the situation changes, but if the club wants to start competing at the right end of the table, keeping their two star names is a must.
