Jason Richardson wants a contract extension from Phoenix Suns
Jason Richardson is in the final year of his contract and he is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer and will have the chance to choose where to play next season. However,
the high-flying guard said on Thursday night he wants to stay with the Phoenix Suns.
Richardson, who has been the Suns’ primary scoring option since the departure of Amar’e Stoudemire, said in an interview with FanHouse.com that he is looking for a contract extension from
the Suns and he is not interested in becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer.
“I'd love to get something done with my contract, get it out of the way, so I don't have to do that this summer. That's my hope,” Richardson told FanHouse.com. “But nothing serious is being
talked about at this point. A contract year can be a distraction, so I'd rather avoid that and just get something done.”
Richardson also added that he understands why the Suns are reluctant on giving him a contract extension. The 29-year-old guard said that the uncertainty in next year’s collective bargaining
agreement and the potential lock-out were the reasons why he has not receive an extension offer.
“If it wasn't for the CBA uncertainty, I think an extension would already be done for me,” said Richardson. “I wish it was, but no one knows what the contracts will look like next year.”
But if the Suns decide to go in a different direction and let go of him, Richardson, who is averaging a team-high 19.2 points in 12 games this season, said that he would consider other options
including playing overseas, where he could make more money if the looming salary cut next season will be approved.
“I want to be here in Phoenix. I like playing for this team. I'm happy, and I think they are happy with me, but sure, I'd consider playing overseas,” Richardson said. “That's something I'd
have to seriously look at. It would be an adventure. It is another option for me. It's something other guys will be looking at, too”
Richardson and the Suns absorbed two straight lopsided defeats against the Miami Heat and the Orlando Magic, and they will try to bounce back on Saturday 20 November when they travel to Charlotte
to face the Bobcats.
