Jason Terry inserts Rajon Rondo into the MVP debate – NBA Update
A few impressive games into the regular season and Rajon Rondo is already being portrayed as MVP stuff by the Boston Celtics.
Rondo is the new face of the Celtics, there is little doubt about that. And, the swingman has been having a ball so far this season. Coming into Sunday’s game against the Detroit Pistons, the point guard had a streak of 33 consecutive game with double figure assists and he did manage to hand out 10 dimes in the surprise blowout on the night as well.
Rondo is now three double assist consecutive outings shy of matching John Stockton’s feat of 37, and is also closing on Magic Johnson’s all time record of 46.
In addition to the assists (13.4 per game), Rondo has also made a huge impact as a scorer. His jump shot has improved considerably and so far this season, he is averaging 13.3 points on a 52 percent shooting from the floor. Most importantly, he has been pivotal in creating clutch plays for the C’s.
These performances have certainly put him in the MVP debate and the ever optimistic Jason Terry, for one, is rooting for him;
“I’ve said that from Day 1 that he’s the best point guard in this league,” said (Jason) Terry. “This year he’s definitely going to be in the talks when they’re talking about MVP, if we can continue to win. The way he controls the game, his leadership, his ability to dominate the game on both ends of the floor is what makes him special.”
When informed about Jet’s MVP comment, Rondo couldn’t help but acknowledge his desire to become one.
“Well, JT’s on my side, so he’s a little biased, but the MVP is in the picture. I would like to be one day. But, we’ve just got to keep winning.”
Winning is however one thing, that the C’s have not been consistent at this season. Out of the eleven games they have played so far in the season, the Celtics have managed only 6 wins and even in those, they have been a tad unconvincing. There are a lot of new pieces in the team, and the chemistry issue is still something that is brothering Doc River’s team.
If Rondo can help Celtics overcome that quickly, he might be able to challenge the likes of LeBron James and Kevin Durant.
