Jason Terry unlikely to get a contract extension from Dallas Mavericks – NBA Report
Jason Terry, the Dallas Mavericks veteran shooting guard has been the mouthpiece of the franchise ever since it won the first NBA championship in its 31 years of history.
Over the course of the last few months, not only has Terry been going gaga about the title win, he has also been rooting for players like DeShawn Stevenson and Tyson Chandler to stay at the Mavs.
However, if the sources are to be believed, ‘JET’ is not likely to get a contract extension next year.
According to media speculation, the Mavs want as much salary cap space as possible come to the 2012 trade window and the free agency. For the same reason, they have offered only one year contract extensions to Carob Butler, the
small forward, and Jose Juan Barea, the reserve point guard, who lit up the NBA final with his gritty scoring bursts last season.
The motive behind the move is also connected with Dirk Nowitzki. The German sharp shooter is 33 now and he will only get older. Given that there were no major names in this year’s free agency, in 2012, the Mavs want to rope in
a star player, who could first accompany Nowitzki for some years and then go on to carry the mantle for them.
Also, the Mavs have been the biggest spenders in the league ever since Mark Cuban took over and with the implementation of tougher rules in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA); their management wants to make sure that
they keep their spending to a minimum.
If the vibe materializes, it will be a big blow for Terry.
There is no doubt that he was the one who shouldered the Mavs when Steve Nash left in 2004, but over the years, his role has been reduced to that of a reserve, who comes off the bench to make an impact with his athleticism and
shooting pedigree. An example of the same was seen in the last NBA finals against the Miami Heat in which he out performed LeBron James.
But, it seems that his stint as a Mavs is on its last legs.
If the Mavs let him after next season, he will be 35 and at that age, he may not find too many decent suitors.
So much for the desire to retire as a Mav.
