Jason Vargas shutout innings helps Seattle Mariners rout Tampa Bay Rays, 7-0 – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners’ starter, Jason Vargas did an outstanding job with the ball as he pitched dominantly throughout his nine innings with an ERA of 3.96 and gave the Mariners a 7-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Safeco Field, Seattle on June 3.
The Mariners started their runs in the first inning and led off 1-0 when Justin Smoak struck a solo homer (379 feet) to right-field. The second inning passed without any run for both sides as the pitchers delivered some impressive throws.
During the third inning, the Mariners’ batters outclassed the pitchers by blasting three runs and took a 4-0 lead. Smoak walked, Carlos Peguero scored a single run and Ichiro Suzuki moved to third base. The second run was taken by Suzuki when Jack Cust was
grounded out to first base. Brendan Ryan put the last run of the third inning when Miguel Olivo reached third base on an infield single.
No score was contributed from any batter in the fourth inning. The Mariners stepped on the gas and accelerated their lead 7-0 at the bottom of the fifth inning. Cust scored one run while Adam Kennedy hit a one-run homer (358 feet) towards right-field and
Olivo homered (369 feet) to left-field.
The pitchers were on top in the last four innings of the game as they allowed no run on their respective pitches. Vargas gave no run on four hits and struck-out four batters. He permitted only one walk on his 115 pitches. Vargas said, “It's definitely something
we haven't put together all season, putting together that many home runs in two games, but you know, it shows we can score runs in a lot of different ways.”
The Mariners’ manager, Eric Wedge was satisfied with the overall performance of his team. He said, “When you have those opportunities you have to take what they give you. We want an aggressive mindset but having said that there has to be a certain degree
of discipline and I think our guys did a good job.”
Andy Sonnanstine was expensive as he pitched five innings with an ERA of 5.68 and gave seven runs on four hits including seven earned runs. He was able to strike-out only one batter and allowed five walks on 97 pitches.
